Rhodesia declares itself an independent republic.
By severing the country’s ties with the United Kingdom, white Prime Minister Ian Smith attempted to prevent the institution of black majority rule. This followed the Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) adopted in 1965, which announced Rhodesia as an independent sovereign state. The future of Rhodesia was settled in 1979, paving the way for majority rule in what became Zimbabwe.
