Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, 69, has been elected the new pope under the papal name Pope Leo XIV, making him the first pope from the U.S.

Robert Prevost has become the 267th pope, the first time in 2,000 years that an American has been appointed to lead the Catholic church. Leo is be the first-ever U.S.-born pope to lead the church and the first pope from the Augustinian order.
